World Teachers’ Day: Rewarding the best
The World Teachers’ Day National Commemoration was held at Thurstan College, Colombo on Wednesday under the patronage of Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena. Acting Education Minister

Deputy Education Minister T B Ekanayake has been appointed acting Education Minister by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena left the country yesterday to participate in the 185th executive committee meeting of the UNESCO.


Police seek assistance

Police seek public assistance to identify a woman who died at the Colombo National Hospital.

Mirihana Police found this woman fallen near the 689 bus route near the Udahamulla Railway Station and Delkanda Junction. Later, she was admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital and transferred to the Colombo National Hospital where she had died on August 27.

According to Police she is about 50 to 60 years.

Any information about her could be given to the nearest Police Station.

SI examination postponed

The written examination for the recruitment of apprentice Sub Inspectors to the permanent cadre of the police service scheduled for October 16 at Asoka Vidyalaya, Colombo has been postponed indefinitely due to unavoidable reasons, Police Headquarters said.

A fresh date for the examination will be announced in due course and new admission cards will be forward to the applicants in due cause it said.

Two accidents in two months

A private bus involved in an accident a month ago, knocked down a student on the Galle road, Panadura Thursday.

The student admitted to the Panadura Base hospital is in a critical condition. The Panadura Police Traffic branch arrested the driver.


Health clinic

Two health clinics organized by the Western Province Waste Management Authority to investigate the health condition of nearly 2,000 people resident in the vicinity of the Thumbowila, Karadiyana solid waste dumping ground will be held.


Rankoth Viharaya anniversary

Rankoth Viharaya Panadura will celebrate its 200th anniversary at a ceremony at the Viharaya on October 10 at 3 pm.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the chief guest. The President will also lay the foundation stone for a new three storeyed building for the Pirivena and Sangawasa, the official ceremony will be held on October 10 at 2.30 pm at the Rankoth Viharaya premises.

Mahanayaka of Amarapura Chapter Most Ven Welamitiyawe Kusaladamma Nayake Thera, Kelaniya University Vice Chancellor and bhikkus in Panadura area will participate, Ven Professor Kahapola Sugatha Rathana Nayake Thera of Rankoth Viharaya said.


Viru Dana Gee Sara 3 at BMICH

The musical show Viru Dana Gee Sara 3 organized by the Defence Ministry Seva Vanitha Unit will be held today at 6.30 pm at the BMICH.

Artistes W D Amaradewa, Amarasiri Pieris, Rohana Beddage, Edward Jayakody, Rodney Warnakula, Wijerathne Warakagoda, Athula Adikari, Anjeleen Gunathilake, Anesley Malewana and Deepika Pieris will perform. Suraj Mapa, Damitha Abeyrathne, Nehara Pieris and the Chandana Wickramasinghe dance troupe will also perform.

The musical show is being held to raise funds for war heroes' welfare projects. Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd is the official media partner.


Annual scientific sessions

The annual scientific sessions of the Sri Lanka College of Venereologist will be held on October 15 and 16 at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo. The theme will be "Women and children in the era of HIV".

Sri Lanka College of Venereologist President Dr Chandrika Wickramasuriya will inaugurate the 15th annual scientific sessions on October 15 at the Hatton National Bank Towers Auditorium, Colombo 10.

Regional Advisor HIV/AIDS/STI, World Health Organization, Regional Office for South East Asia Dr Iyanthi Abeyewickreme will be the Chief Guest.

The pre-congress sessions will be held on October 14 at the National STD/AIDS Control Program of Sri Lanka Auditorium. Academic sessions will be held on October 14 at 9am at Galle Face Hotel.


Competition

The sixth SIP National Abacus and Mental Arithmetic competition organized by SIP Academy Lanka Pvt Ltd for children between six to 12 will be held on October 10 at 9.00 am at St. Joseph's College Auditorium, Colombo. Prize distribution will be at 2.00 pm.

Arrested

Mahawela police arrested a school teacher who possessed lewd pictures. Police said the suspected teacher is a resident of the Millawana area.

He was produced before the Dambulla acting Magistrate and remanded.


National Human Resources Development Council Chairman

Nimal Bopage has been appointed National Human Resources Development Council Chairman by Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma.

A former Divisional Secretary for Kelaniya and Elahera, Bopage had been working as accountant for several Government and private institutions.

He received his primary education at Ahangama Vijitha Maha Vidyalaya and secondary education at Gurukula Vidyalaya, Kelaniya.


Honest cop

A hand bag containing Rs 50,000, a mobile phone and a passport lying at the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy was handed over to the owner by Police Sergeant D J Wickramasinghe.

Police had traced the owner from the address in the passport.

Couple arrested for cruelty to children

A woman and her paramour in Katugastota were arrested yesterday for cruelty to two children aged nine and three.

The woman told Kandy Police that she had been living with her paramour and the child born to them had been sold. Investigations revealed that the man had burnt the two children several times. He is a father of three daughters aged 10, four and one. Police arrested the couple on a tip off by residents.











 


Hambantota study centre building opening

The new building of the Hambantota Study Center of the Open University of Sri Lanka will be opened by Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake today at 10.00 a m.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, External Affairs Minister G L Peiris, Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijelal de Silva, Deputy Health Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Namal Rajapaksa MP and Open University of Sri Lanka Vice Chancellor Prof Upali Vidanapathirana will participate.

Death of Nelie Neslin Perera

The death occurred of Kalubowilage Nelie Neslin Perera.

She is the mother of former Minister and Western Provincial Council Member Hector Bethmage and mother-in-law of Ranjith Perera (Lake House).

The remains lie at No 6, Walawwatta Road, Gangodawila, Nugegoda.

The funeral will take place at Udahamulla cemetery on Sunday at 4 p.m.
 



 


Consul General of Latvia in Sri Lanka, Thomas F Daetwyler visited Republic of Latvia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry together with Commercial Attach‚ Cubby Wijetunge. They were briefed on the recent developments in Latvia and the interest to promote bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and Latvia. A working visit was also paid to the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, the Medical Faculty of Stradina University of Latvia as well as the Technical University of Latvia. A meeting was also held with the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Latvia Arnis Anchupans.
