NIC, Birth Certificate must for marriages

In the wake of various reports relating to under-aged marriages, the Registrar General Department yesterday issued a special circular under which production of either the National Identity Card or Birth Certificate has been made compulsory for marriages.

The Department in the circular said those who are going to get married should produce either their Birth Certificate or National Identity Card to the registrars.

This decision was arrived at following reports about a number of underaged marriages in the media in the recent past.

Department Director General E M Gunasekera said the circular has been sent to almost all registrars.
