Compost made from garbage

The Embilipitiya town Council has started a program to produce
compost manure from garbage at Kanabandiara, in the Embilipitiya Paper
Mill colony as a solution for the garbage problem.
The Mahaweli Authority has granted two acres to the town council to
dump garbage. After selecting garbage as glass, plastic, steel, decaying
and undecaying items. Decaying matters are made into compost manure and
send them to the market as packeted compost manure, Mayor Padmini
Weerasinghe told the media.
The town council has spent Rs 1.2 million for the program.

Douglas Pathiranage

Douglas Pathiranage of No. 51, Nugahena Mawatha, Ganemulla has
undergone a liver transplant surgery at the Medanta Medicity hospital,
New Delhi, India and is under medication at the same hospital. Hospital
authorities said Rs 4.9 million is needed for further treatment.
Pathiranage had spent Rs 7.8 million for the surgery and he is in
distress to find the balance. Pathiranage's relatives seek public
assistance.

D A Amila Karuanratne (22) of Vatinapaha North, Minuwangoda is
suffering from a brain tumour (intra ventricular, meningioma). He gets
two to three fits per day and is unable to go to work. Senior Consultant
Neurosurgeon and Presidential Advisor Dr Sunil Perera has recommended an
urgent surgery to improve his quality of life. The surgery is estimated
to cost Rs 700,000. Karunaratne says he is unable to foot this bill. He
requests the public to assist him by sending financial contributions to

World Hospice Day
The World Hospice Day commemorating ceremony of the Sri Lanka Cancer
Society will be held on October 10 at 10 am at Santha Sevena Hospice,
National Cancer Institute, Hospital Road, Maharagama.
The theme this year is 'Sharing the care'.
Poly clinic
The Sri Lanka Cancer Society at 37/25, Bullers Lane, Colombo will
hold their next poly clinic October 10 from 8.30 am to 11.00 am to
screen patients for early detection of all types of cancer.
Clinical Breast examination and Pap Smears will also be done. Medical
advice will also be provided. All services are free of charge.
Moon sighting Conference
The moon sighting conference will be held today after Salath UL
Maghrib under the auspicies of the Colombo Grand Mosque at the
Madrasathul Hameedian Hall, Colombo Grand Mosque, to determine the date
to commence the Islamic month of Dhul Qa DHA Hijri 1431 on the evidence
of sighting the new moon in any Part of Sri Lanka. The Colombo Grand
Mosque appealed to the public to look out for the new moon of Dhul Qa
Dha Hijri 1431 immediately after Maghrib, today and inform on 011

Lecture on Bird Conservation
Colombo University Environment Sciences Head and ornithologist Prof
Sarath Kotagama will deliver a lecture on Bird conservation in Sri Lanka
with reference to endemic and migrants at the Sri Lanka Association for
the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Auditorium, 120/10, Vidya Mawatha,
Off Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 on October 14.
Felicitation ceremony
A ceremony to felicitate Prof Dayananda Somasundara for his 40 year
service to the cause of literature will be held at the Sabaragamuwa
University Auditorium on October 14 at 2 pm. The program will include
the launching of a felicitation volume and literary works.
Sabaragamuwa Governor W J M Lokubandara will be the chief guest.
Chancellor Ven Prof Kamburugamuwe Vajira Nayaka thera and Most Ven
Karagoda Uyangoda Maithri Murthi Mahanayake Thera will also grace the
occasion.
International Teachers’ Day: Paying tribute
