Visually handicapped want wider opportunities
The Sri Lanka Visually Handicapped People's Forum requested the
Government to widen opportunities given to visually handicapped people.

They made this request when they met Prime Minister DM Jayaratne at
the Prime Minister's office yesterday.
The Forum made this request to mark World White Cane Day which falls
on October 15.
The Prime Minister presented white canes to them.
They also requested to increase the number of five disabled families
who are paid monthly allowances in each Divisional Secretariat to 10 and
allocate 30 percent to visually handicapped families. The Forum also
requested that the public administration circular stating three percent
of Government employment is to be given to disabled people to be passed
as an act in Parliament and allocate one percent to visually handicapped
people.
Among the other requests are to provide job opportunities to visually
handicapped graduates irrespective of waiting list and to give visually
handicapped people's children priority in school admission.
The Prime Minister said he will look into this after making the
relevant Ministries aware of the requests. |
