Visually handicapped want wider opportunities

The Sri Lanka Visually Handicapped People's Forum requested the Government to widen opportunities given to visually handicapped people.

Prime Minister DM Jayaratne met members of the Sri Lanka Visually Handicapped People’s Forum

They made this request when they met Prime Minister DM Jayaratne at the Prime Minister's office yesterday.

The Forum made this request to mark World White Cane Day which falls on October 15.

The Prime Minister presented white canes to them.

They also requested to increase the number of five disabled families who are paid monthly allowances in each Divisional Secretariat to 10 and allocate 30 percent to visually handicapped families. The Forum also requested that the public administration circular stating three percent of Government employment is to be given to disabled people to be passed as an act in Parliament and allocate one percent to visually handicapped people.

Among the other requests are to provide job opportunities to visually handicapped graduates irrespective of waiting list and to give visually handicapped people's children priority in school admission.

The Prime Minister said he will look into this after making the relevant Ministries aware of the requests.
