India to help handicraft industry

Handicrafts is one of the most important sectors in a country to be preserved and developed. The Indian Government will help develop the handicrafts industry in Sri Lanka, Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, Ashok K. Kantha said.

He made these comments in a discussion during his recent visit to the National Crafts Council at the Battaramulla Janakala Kendraya on the invitation of National Crafts Council Chairman Buddhi Keerthisena.

The High Commissioner said the Indian Government will provide assistance to train craftsmen to hold bilateral handicrafts exhibitions under a joint venture and uplift social status of craftsmen.

Ashok K. Kantha agreed to explore the possibility of getting financial assistance for the establishment of the production villages under a Small Project Development Scheme.

Buddhi Keerthisena emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge, skills and experience of Indian master craftsmen.
