Nothing spectacular on first day

The All Island Schools Games (Track and Field) took off successfully despite the persistent rain on the first day at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Nothing spectacular occurred in the seven final events worked off after the Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa opened the biggest sports festival in the schools extra curriculum activity.

Also present were the Sports Minister C B Ratnayake, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Education Deputy Minister T B Ekananayke.

Today, the second day of the meet will see 35 finals being conducted. Among them are the boys and girls Under 15, 17 and under 19, 200m finals from 2.30pm onwards and the Under 21 boys and girls 800m final scheduled at 3.55pm.

The five-day meet will end on October 3 (Sunday).

High Jump - Girls Under 17

1 Madushani Siriwardena (Galenbindunawewa MV) 1.65 m, 2 K H Kulatunga (Sevamuktha Kandavura MV, Polonnaruwa) 1.55 m, 3 Vasana Subodhini Harischandra (Dheerananda MV, Pilimathalawa) 1.50 m.

Javelin Throw - Boys Under 19

1 Pramuka Wijesekera (St Peter’s, Colombo 4) 54.03 m, 2 R Prabath Kanishka (Maris Stella) 53.87 m, 3 H Rukmal Shantha (Ananda Sasthralaya, Mathugama) 50.64 m.

Discuss throw - Boys Under 17

1 Sanjuna Sumanaweera (Royal Institute, Colombo 5) 45.99 m, 2 R M G Ratnayake (Trinity) 43.38 m, 3 L P S de Silva (Royal) 43.25 m.

Pole Vault - Girls Under 19

Long Jump - Girls Under 15

Long Jump - Girls Under 21
