New railway signal system proposed
Transport Deputy Minister Rohana Kumara Dissanayake said that a new
signal system will be introduced to ensure better coordination and
safety between the Colombo Fort Railway station and other railway
stations.
Dissanayake on an inspection tour of the Railway’s Signal Department
in Dematagoda yesterday said that the current signal system installed at
the Colombo Fort Railway station is nearly 50 years old.
He said that the Railways Department has taken measures to develop
the railway communication system on railway lines by introducing modern
facilities. A proper signal system should be installed replacing the old
one to streamline train services to operate according to timetables and
avoid delays.
Trains would be inter-connected under this advanced communication
system enabling the exchange of messages in times of emergency.
Meanwhile, a separate signaling system will be installed at
Peradeniya to increase the capacity of traffic. With this move, trains
operating on the upcountry line will be brought under this signaling
system allowing them to function properly.
