Year Five Scholarship examination:
People’s Bank rewards top students
The People’s bank recently awarded the top performing students of the
Grade 5 Scholarship Examinations at the Auditorium of Isurupaya in
Battaramulla.
The awards ceremony was chaired by Education Minister Bandula
Gunawardene, amidst a gathering of other Public Representatives,
together with the Commissioner General of Examinations - Anura
Edirisinghe, People’s Bank Chairman W Karunajeewa, Head of Marketing and
Public Affairs of People’s Bank Deepal Abeysekera, Deputy General
Manager Personal Banking Dr Nihal Ranjith Jayathilake and other Regional
Managers and Branch Managers of People’s Bank.

Parents of the top performers, together with the Principals and
Teachers of the respective schools also participated in this grand
occasion.
The awards presentation saw 11 students from both Sinhala and Tamil
mediums who had achieved the rankings of first, second and third at the
recently concluded Scholarship Examinations throughout the island being
rewarded by People’s Bank.
First place achievers were awarded Rs 100,000 each whilst second and
third place achievers were awarded Rs 50,000 and 25,000 each
respectively.
The bank has also launched a program for all students who have passed
the grade 5 Scholarship examinations to be awarded with cash gifts under
the Sisu Udana scholarship program.
Under this scholarship scheme cash prizes worth Rs 15,000, 12,500 and
10,000 will be awarded to students who are placed first, second and
third respectively from all districts islandwide even without the
student maintaining a Sisu Udana account with the bank. Further,
People’s Bank will award 800 applicable students, who have a minimum
balance of Rs 2,500 in their Sisu Udana accounts as at 22nd August 2010,
with a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each. People’s Bank, who has always
pitched to be the first in playing a part to uplift the lives of those
displaced in the North and East also took the opportunity to conduct the
scholarship workshops to the children of the relief villages in the war
stricken areas.
The project helps to build the personalities of both the children as
well as the parents as understanding adults and therefore the advice
given through these programs are of utmost importance to build the lives
of our future generations.
People’s Bank ‘Sisu Udana Kusalatha Pranama’ scholarship schemes and
workshops for Year 5 students play a key role in planting seeds of
knowledge in the hearts and minds of little children.
In addition, students who pass their GCE Ordinary Level examinations
with top results islandwide as well as in their respective districts are
also awarded special scholarships, whilst GCE Advanced Level students
who excel in science, arts, commerce and mathematics streams are awarded
cash prizes under this unique social service program of the bank.
Out of all People’s Bank saving schemes, the students’ saving schemes
are considered as most important.
Over the years People’s Bank has strengthen its position as being the
bank that uplifts lives of the younger generation and this has always
been at the forefront of all People’s Bank social responsibility
initiative.
The trust placed on People’s Bank it’s further proven by the fact
that People’s Bank savings accounts and student saving accounts are the
popular choice of over 50 percent of Sri Lanka’s student population.
