An International Buddhist Conference to be held in Colombo from May 3
to 7, 2011 commemorating the 2,600th Sambuddha Jayanthi will share
experiences and knowledge of Buddhism with other countries, Sambuddha
Jayanthi Operational Committee Secretary K. Kalupahana told the Daily
News.
He said that this conference would be able to show the world that Sri
Lankans are living in peace and harmony now with the conclusion of the
war. “We have organized this conference in a peaceful environment that
dawned in Sri Lanka after many years.
Negative world opinions will be put to rest and this will be an
opportunity for us to correct any misconceptions. It will help create a
positive image about the country” he said.
He also said that Sri Lanka is a rare country with a Buddhist
civilization of over 2,300 years and has continued the Buddhist way of
life without interruption throughout the history.
The inauguration ceremony will be held in Colombo and the Closing
ceremony will take place at the Pallekele Buddhist Center of the Dalada
Maligawa in Kandy.
About 350 foreign and local representatives from over 50 countries
will participate in this event.
