One missing as rains lash Galle

A resident in Katukanaththa, Karandeniya was reported missing
following heavy floods in the Ambalangoda Karandeniya, Elpitiya and
Balapitiya in the Galle district caused by heavy showers experienced in
the region during the last few days.
Heavy showers were experienced throughout the country during the last
two days. The Puttalam-Mannar road was closed for traffic due to the
flood conditions.
Heavy showers and strong winds could be expected all over the country
during the ensuing period due to the disturbance in the lower
atmosphere, said Meteorologist-in-charge D A Jayasinghearachchi.
“Sri Lanka is experiencing the South West Monsoon Season and it will
be over after a week.
With the beginning of the Second inter monsoon period this condition
will change. Clear weather can be expected in the morning, while there
will be evening showers,” he said.
Meanwhile, Disaster Relief Service Centre, Galle Coordinating Officer
Sanjeewa Karunaratne said 126 members of 25 families in Galle District
have been displaced as a result of heavy rains, Sumathipala Deeyagahage,
our Southern Province Roving correspondent reports. One hundred and two
members from 24 families of Elpitiya and four members of one family in
Welivitiya Divitura consists of this group.
Karandeniya police has taken steps to transport students marooned at
Karandeniya Maha Vidyalaya. The Disaster Management unit informed that
27 house in Elpitiya were damaged.
Additional District Secretary, Galle Bandula Harischandra said flood
waters in many areas in the Gale district was subsiding by yesterday.
