Perspectives for Accelerated Growth
The Sri Lanka Economic Association (SLEA) will be holding its Annual
Sessions of 2010 during October 15 to 16, 2010 at the Centre of Banking
Studies of the Central Bank at Rajagiriya. The Sessional Theme will be
Perspectives for Accelerated Growth and Development. The inaugural
session on October 15 (4pm to 7.30pm) will be followed by the Theme
Seminar on the following day, October 16 (9am to 6pm). The Sessions will
be inaugurated by CBSL former Governor A S Jayawardena, while Japanese
Ambassador for Sri Lanka H E Kunio Takahashi will be the Guest of Honour,
and CBSL former Deputy Governor W A Wijewardena will be the keynote
speaker.
The theme “Perspectives for Accelerated Growth and Development” takes
on significance in this context because the SLEA’s Annual Sessions will
lay special emphasis on how far high rates of GDP growth are associated
with reducing inequality, achieving higher living standards and
increasing the wellbeing of the people.
It is recognized that growth by itself does not ensure that the
fruits of such growth will be equitably shared. Another aspect of high
growth and development is the improvements that must be made in
Education and Health. In fact these latter are not only a means to
increase growth and particularly development but are in fact are an end
in themselves.
The Annual Sessions will also examine the strategies and policies
that have to be followed for attaining high growth and development and
in particular what policies have to be followed to mobilize both foreign
and domestic resources. In the long-run economic growth has to be
sustainable.
Critical to achieving high and sustainable growth and development is
the availability of an adequate physical and social infrastructure. At
the same time high growth requires increased levels of efficiency and
competitiveness which will increase domestic income and exports.
High growth, if it were to be sustainable, would have to go hand in
hand with high exports. The discussions will focus on these issues which
are relevant to the theme of the Annual Sessions
