Errant traders in hot water

Sri Lanka Measurement Unit’s, Standards and Services Department has taken legal action against 635 traders who sold underweight bread to customers. The Department under the instructions of Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando conducted islandwide raids from June 28 to September 28 and nabbed these errant traders.

Minister Fernando told the Daily News that stern action will be taken against errant traders and black marketeers who fleeced customers flouting the Consumer Protection Act.

“We conducted nearly 1,070 raids and caught errant traders on various ruses,” the Minister said. These ruses included the selling of underweight bread, using unregulated weights and measurements, using unauthorized and uncertified balances and other offences violating a Measurement Units, Standards and Services Act No 35 of 1995.
