Taxila College commemorates C W W Kannangara

Taxila College, Horana yesterday commenced the week long program to
commemorate former Education Minister C W W Kannangara parallel to his
41st death anniversary. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and
Public Management Reforms Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake inaugurated
the program yesterday. The Ministers also inaugurated the educational
exhibition and the carnival at the college premises.
The students and the Teachers of the Taxila Central College, Horana
organized this program to commemorate former Education Minister C W W
Kannangara who introduced the free education system to the country.
Former Minister Kannangara ensured a sound education for the
outstanding students in backward villages in the country by establishing
Central Colleges.
Taxila Central College is among the first school established under
the Central College concept mooted by Former Minister C W W Kannangara.
Thousands of students who could not afford private schools were
benefited by this move. C W W Kannangara who was known as the Father of
Free Education was of the firm view that all children of the country
should have access to free education.
Taxila College, Horana has also organized an educational exhibition
and a carnival parallel to the commemoration of Former Minister C W W
Kannangara. The exhibition and the carnival will end on October 03.
The visitors will receive a rare opportunity of visiting the stalls
of the three Forces and the Police. High tech equipment used by the Sri
Lankan Forces to wipe out terrorism from the country will also be on
display at this exhibition.
A large number of Government institutions are expected to participate
in this exhibition.
A special mobile service is conducted by the Department of
Registrations of Persons and Department of Immigration and Emmigration
for the benefit of the people.
An eye clinic is also held at the exhibition premises everyday that
commenced from yesterday and free spectacles would be distributed among
the deserved persons with vision impairment.
The organizers have invited more than 100 private sector companies to
the exhibition where those visiting the exhibition can purchase various
items.
The students will conduct a large number of exhibition stalls. A
scientific exhibition, a model of the Colombo Stock Exchange and
Agricultural exhibition are among them.
The Past Pupils’ Association of the All Island Central Colleges will
extend their support to make the event a success.
