Waste disposal plan mooted

A national plan to dispose garbage in the city has been drafted to be put into action through Municipal Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas, said Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

Three solid waste dumping sites located at Bloemendhal, Karadiyana and Kolonnawa will be the central attraction under this plan.

Garbage piled up at Bloemendhal will be used to produce compost fertilizer. This will be carried out as a private-public partnership project under the concern “Waste to Energy”. A Malaysian company has joined hands with the Ministry in this process.

The Karadiyana solid waste dumping site will be handed over to a local company for a compost fertilizer project while Kolonnawa dumping site will be a source of another fertilizer project implemented by the Western Province Waste Management Authority.
