Operation cleanup a success, claims IGP

IGP Mahinda Balasuriya

Over 4,585 cases have been filed against persons involved in environment pollution, failing to eradicate mosquito breeding places, obstructing the pavements, setting up unauthorised constructions and sand mining, Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya said.

He said a well planned program has been launched to minimize the rate of crime and disaster by uplifting Police officers’ professional standards.

The IGP addressing the media yesterday at the Police Headquarters said a special unit had been setup to wipe-out illegal liquor and hard drug menace in the country. This unit had filed 13,879 cases since September 1 to 21, 2010, the IGP said.

The special squad had obtained STF assistance to arrest underworld suspects involved in crime.

The IGP said he will make arrangements to obtain the assistance of Tamil speaking officers to be deployed in the North and the East areas to assist the Tamil speaking people in those areas to make their complaints in Tamil language.

Senior DIG NK Illangakoon, DIG Anura Senanayake, DIG Sisira Mendis and Director General Media Lakshman Hulugalla were also present.
