Walk marks Hillwood's 120th anniversary

The Past Pupils Association of Hillwood College, Kandy to commemorate its 120th anniversary has organized a 'walk' to raise funds for the school development projects.

This event will be held on October 2 from 9.30 a.m. The walk will begin at the Asgiriya Police Grounds and proceed along Hill Street, Trincomalee street (D.S. Senanayaka Veediya) upto the Kandy City Centre, venue of the funfair.


Over 650 under judicial restraint

About 653 persons below the age of 25 are held under judicial restraint, said Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister D E W Gunasekera in Parliament yesterday.

This amounts to 5.1 percent of the total number of judicial restraints at present. He mentioned that 1,639 persons below the age of 25 were under remand custody and this was a percentage of 11.9 percent. The Minister revealed these facts in response to a question raised by UPFA MP Rajiva Wijesinha.


Remembering Hector Kobbekaduwa

Several commemorative ceremonies to mark the 27th death anniversary of Minister Hector Kobbekaduwa will be held in the Yatinuwara electorate on September 25.

Highlights will include a blood donation campaign at the Peradeniya Hector Kobbekaduwa Vocational Training Centre and a commemorative meeting at the Urapola Sri Abhayaraja Piriven Viharaya.


CEB cracks down on power pirates

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) will nab power pirates and take maximum legal action against illegal power users, Power and Energy Ministry sources said.

In line with Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka’s effort to make the Ministry corruption free and efficient, raids will be carried out throughout the country. Most illegal power users have already been identified during raids, a Ministry official said.

The CEB flying squad carried out a two-day raiding mission in the Ampara district and identified 224 instances of power piracy. The suspects were produced before courts and collected over Rs. Three million in fines by the CEB.

The CEB found many electric meters installed in houses were rigged. The CEB incurred massive loses due to these illegal power connections, he said.

The Power and Energy Ministry has decided to bring all power pirates before the courts and disconnect their power connections for a long period in lieu of the CEB loses, the source added.


Book launch

Rajaye Idam Neethiya, a book on the Government's Land Law authored by Attorney Karunaratne Herath will be launched at a ceremony at the SLFI, Colombo on September 26 at 9.00 a.m.

Chief Justice Asoka N de Silva will be the Chief Guest.


Water interruption

water supply will be stopped in the following areas for 26 hours from 9.00 a.m. on September 25 (Saturday) to 11.00 a.m. 26 (Sunday).

Colombo Fort, Chatham Street, Grandpass Layardsbroadway, Crowisland, Mutwal, Mahawatta, Kotahena, Aluth Mawatha, Maha Vidyala Mawatha, Maha Kumarage Mawatha, Vivekananda Kanda and Colombo Port.


ACWBC event to mark Alders’ Week

The All Ceylon Women’s Buddhist Congress (ACWBC) Sandhya Elders’ Home will conduct an Elders’ Week from October 1 to 7. An Elders’ Walk organized by Helpage will be held on October 1 at 8 a.m from the ACWBC Headquarters to the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute..

Ven Thalangama Sugatananda Thera of Kolonnawa Rajamaha Vihara will deliver a Buddhist sermon on October 2 from 4.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m, a health clinic will be held on October 3 from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m, a Pilgrimage to Somawathi Chaitya from October 4 to 05, sports meet on October 6 at 3.00 p.m and concert and prize giving will be held on October 7 at 3.00 p.m.


Acid throwing incident:

Three further remanded

Three suspects including a medical practitioner held in connection with an acid throwing incident were further remanded till October 4 by Nugegoda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Rohana Anura Kumara Herath when they were produced in Court yesterday.

The three suspects are Dr Priyantha Somendra Totagamuwa, Jagath Ruwankumara Sannasgala and Suranga Saman Sannasgala. They are alleged to have caused serve injuries to S Aruni Indika Abeysinghe by blocking her way and throwing acid on her body while she was on her way to work.


Monkey upto its tricks in Panadura

A monkey which went berserk entered houses, damaged pots and pans in Panadura Monday. When residents lit crackers the animal had fled. Several people had been injured after being bitten by the monkey. Panadura Police are on the prowl to nab the animal.


Lecture by Prof Tissa Kariyawasam

The Royal Asiatic Society has organized a lecture by Prof Tissa Kariyawasam titled Rev D.J. Gogerly, RAS (CB) and the Revival of Buddhists to mark 2600 years of the Sambuddhatava Jayanthi.

The lecture will be held on September 27 at 5.00 p.m at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, 96, Ananda Coomarswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The lecture is open to the public.


Bukhary Grand feast

The annual Bukhary Grand Feast and 224th Year Commemoration in memory of Al Quthubu Syyed Muhammad Jalalivil Mowlal Bukhariyil Quadiriyil Cannoori will be held on September 26 at 10.30 a.m at the Bukhary Thaika Mosque, Maradana, Colombo.

It will be held under the patronage of Afdhalul Ulama Al Haj Dr Thaika Shuaib Alim and Khaleefa Al Haj Ash Sheikh Thaika Ahmed Nasir Alim. Burdha Majlis, Silsila Majlis Bukhary Manaquib, Ya Nabi and Dua will also be held. The SLBC Muslim Service will broadcast the proceedings from 10.30 a.m to 12.30 p.m.

‘Suraj Presents Elements’ dance concert, held recently which featured 28 dance items in a mix of Sinhala, Tamil, Hindi and English dance forms will be telecast over Rupavahini today at 10 p.m.

The 111th anniversary ceremony of Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society will be held on October 2 at the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society headquarter Colombo 10.
