Cops remanded
Mahanama VITHANAGE-Malwana group correspondent
A sub Inspector and police constable of the Kirindiwela police were
remanded on suspicion for the death of a person who was in the police
custody till September 27 by Pugoda Magistrate and Additioal District
Judge Aravinda Perera on Monday.
The detainee died in Police Custody A.A. David is a 47 year bachelor
of Pepiliyawala, Siyambalagahawatta.
Road to be reconstructed
The Matale Udupihilla old road in Kandy-Jaffna A-9 route will be
reconstructed and widened at a cost of Rs 50 million under a speedy road
development program.
Groundwork for this road was inaugurated Monday under the patronage
of Highways Deputy Minister Nirmala Kotalawala and the Transport Deputy
Minister Rohana Dissanayake.
The road will be reconstructed as an alternative route for A9 and is
expected to complete within two months.
New building for Buddhist Education Faculty

Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake laid the foundation stone
for the construction of a new building for the Faculty of Buddhist
Education of the Bhikkhu University at Anuradhapura, Monday.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 268 million.
He also open a new building constructed for the Faculty of Medicine.
Scientists gather in Sri Lanka
The 15th International conference on Physics of Estuaries and Coastal
Seas conference which began on September 14 will be held at the Mount
Lavinia Hotel until September 17. The conference known as 'PECS' is held
every two years. This is the first time it is being held in a developing
country.
The conference has attracted over 80 scientists including those from
Australia, Germany, Holland, UK and USA. It includes many of the world's
leading scientists. The objectives of PECS conferences are to promote
exchange of information on recent developments in physics of estuaries
and coastal seas; stimulate interaction between coastal engineers and
coastal oceanographers; and provide a forum for junior scientists and
engineers where they feel comfortable presenting and testing their
ideas.
Locals scientists from NARA, Coastal Conservation Department, Sri
Lanka Navy and from Moratuwa, Ruhuna and Open Universities and
expatriate Sri Lankans are participating in the conference.
BCIS inauguration ceremony
Shekhar Gupta will deliver the keynote address at the inauguration
ceremony of the International Relations Intake for 2010 on September 18
from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. at the Bandaranaike Centre for
International Studies Auditorium.
Gupta, the Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Express will deliver the
keynote address on 'India-Sri Lanka Relations in the Post War Context'.
Literary festival in Galle
The Galle District (Sahithya) literary festival jointly organised by
the National Heritage and Cultural Affairs Ministry, Cultural Affairs
Department and the Galle District Secretariat under the direction of
Deputy Minister Gunaratne Weerakoon will be held at the Karandeniya MMV
Hall on September 17 at 9 a.m.
National Heritage and Cultural Affairs Minister Pavithra
Wanniarachchi, Education Deputy Minister T B Ekanayake and Southern
Province Chief Minister Shan Wijeyalal de Silva will be the Chief
Guests. Highlights will include the distribution of trophies and cash
awards to a batch of 20 veteran artistes and literati and cash prizes
and certificates to a batch of 44 students who had won various contests
held in this connection.
Provincial Governors meet in Trincomalee

The 13th convention of the Provincial Governors will be held from
September 17 to 19 at Chaya Olu Holiday Resort, Trincomalee.
The convention is the first to be held in the Eastern Province after
the total eradication of LTTE.
North Western Province Governor Tissa R. Balalla will preside.
Kidney patient seeks help
Neetha Weerasinghe, 54, of No 20, Kalapaluwawa, Rajagiriya has end
stage renal disease.
She needs to undergo a kidney transplant as a definitive treatment.
Weerasinghe also needs to find a voluntary kidney donor.
Her blood group is A positive.

NERDO a registered organization
An NGO by the name 'North East Rehabilitation and Development
Organization (NERDO) has been registered at the National Secretariat for
NGOs under registration number FL 140006 to assist in the development of
the Northern and Eastern Provinces said Media Centre for National
Security Director General Lakshman Hulugalla in a communique issued
yesterday.
The communique denied as false a report published in a weekend
newspaper attributing to the Director General's statement which said the
formation of an organization by such name had not been notified to the
National Secretariat for NGOs.
Water interruption
There will be an interruption to water supply in the following areas
from 8.30 am to 5 pm on September 18 due to the stoppage of power supply
to the Kethhena water purification centre belonging to Kalutara
Integrated water system.
The areas affected are Wadduwa, Waskaduwa, Pothupitiya, Kalutara
(North/South), Katukurunda, Nagoda, Payagala, Maggona, Beruwala,
Kaluwamodara, Moragalla, Dharga Town, Aluthgama, Bentara, Bombuwala,
Pilaminawatta.
Wildlife lecture
An illustrated lecture on "Sinharaja. The World Heritage Site" will
be delivered by Vimukthi Weeratunga, the author and biodiversity co-ordinator
for the International Union for Conservation of Nature, at the
Auditorium for the Advancement of Science, 120/10, Vidya Mawatha, off
Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07 (BMICH end) on Thursday the September 16 at
6.00 p.m.
Buddhist discussion
Prof. Raja de Alwis, will conduct a Buddhist discussion in English,
on "Meditation", at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society,
Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya, on September 18, at 4.30 p.m.

Exhibition
An Engineering and Educational exhibition organized by the Peradeniya
University's Engineering Faculty to mark its 60th anniversary will be
