Apparel industry shows increasing trend

Although a diminishing market for Sri Lankan garments produced by the apparel industry was expected by certain quarters, following the suspension of the GSP plus facility by the European Union, potential buyers of Sri Lankan garments has shown an increasing trend, said Link Apparel Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Mihindu Ruhunage. The secret behind this is the high quality of garments produced by Sri Lanka, he said. Ruhunage said he believed this favourable turn of events was partly due to the country's good fortune in having an astute leader at its helm.

He said the increase of worker salaries in other garment producing countries such as Bangladesh and China have also contributed towards making Sri Lankan garments more competitive in the world market.
