Canals to facilitate public transport

According to a concept of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa all canals in Colombo will be renovated and used as an alternative mode of public transport.

The Defence Ssecretary assigned this duty to the Sri Lanka Navy to take action to repair all canals in Colombo and use it for the public transportation.

The Navy under the supervision of Navy Commender Vice Admiral TSG Samarasingha commerced the renovation of Colombo canals. Under this program the Kirulapone canal was renovated and a boat service is being used by the Sri Lanka Navy from Wellawatte to Battaramulla. All other canals also would be renovated and used for public transportation.

The Navy is supported by the Lowland Development Board, Central Environmental Authority and Colombo Municipal Council.
