Inginiyagala power plant:

Power generation to be upped by seven MWs

The Power and Energy Ministry will buy generators for the Inginiyagala power plant to increase its power generation by another seven MWs.

Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka instructed the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and other authorities to submit a report including its expenditure and the timeframe needed to complete this project, with immediate effect.

The Minister made this instructions after a field visit to the Inginiyagala power plant to find out the possibility of increasing power generation to cater to the needs of Ampara District.

Power and Energy Ministry Media Secretary Danushka Ramanayaka told the Daily News that the Inginiyagala power plant contributes eight MWs to the national grid although it was established in 1945 to generate 12 Mws.

Some generators have stopped functioning reducing its power generation to eight Mws as the machines are old.

The Media Secretary said only 40 percent of the Ampara District has been provided with electricity.

The Ministry is planning to increase the power supply in Ampara district to 100 percent another two years.
