‘Infocom, e-literacy will drive growth in backward areas’

The country and the information and communication technology sector (ICT)
need to create ample employment opportunities for women to get their
fullest contribution to achieve development objectives in the country
while assisting them to enhance their living standards, Mobitel CEO
Suren Amarasekera said. Speaking at the eighth Annual CTO forum 2010 he
said deployment of “infocom” technology and other latest technologies
should be done faster to achieve the Government objective to double per
capita income in years to come.
Infocom and E-literacy will be the main requirements to drive the
growth in areas and sectors that are considered as backward.
The country also needs to team up with more organizations to promote
Mlearning to achieve the economic prosperity and competence in the
country,” he said.
“It is a timely need to harness the full potential in human
resources, natural resources, capital formation, economy integration,
project management, research and testing to prosper the country.
Being small players in the telecommunication sector in a small
country like Sri Lanka is not an impediment and it will assist to
harness the potential in the relevant areas,” Amarasekera said.
He said telecommunication infrastructure facilities provided to
Colombo city reaches to about 42 percent and the city’s contribution to
the GDP is 45 percent.
