Program to ascertain drinking water composition

With the spreading of kidney disease in many parts of the
Anuradhapura District, Institute of Fundamental Studies, Kandy has
initiated a research program to ascertain the composition of drinking
water in different areas in the District.
Accordingly, a research was conducted at Rambewa Central College
using drinking water brought to the school by students. Similar
researches are to be held in Willachchiya and Pemaduwa.
Vanni schools re-open Jaffna Special correspondent
Ninety seven percent of the schools in Vanni have been re-opened for
the third term in Thunkai out of fifty four schools fifty three have
been re-opened. In Kilinochchi out of 121 schools 81 schools and in
Mullaithivu out of 54 schools 17 have been re-opened. The Kilinochchi
student population is 24,794. About 1,357 teachers are attached to the
schools there.
The UNICEF has undertaken to rehabilitate 28 schools, said Education
Director P. Vigneswaran.
Dengue eradication
A Dengue eradication drive has been started at Pallai where
resettlement took place two months ago.
The Health and Pradeshiya Sabha officials along with the public
cleaned the Pallai market, bus stand and the wayside of the A9 highway.
Insecticide was sprayed on the bushes and muddy areas.
Ayurveda counselling program
Colombo District Ayurveda Physicians’ Cooperative Society (Ltd) had
launched a Ayurveda counselling program to mark the Ayurveda Year 2010
announced by the Indigenous Ministry.
The 53rd program of this series of programs will be held on September
22 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Sri Vijayanandaramaya, Honnantara,
Piliyandala.
‘Ape Vedakama – Ape Gamata’ is the theme of the program.More than 10
Ayurveda specialist physicians will be present at the counselling
program.
A special lecture will be delivered under the them ‘Buddhism and
Ayurvedaya’.Western Province Ayurveda Commissioner Dr Nimal Karunasiri,
and a specialist on heart diseases Dr Nanda Wijeratne also will be
present.
EU pushes to grant trade aid to Pakistan
EU diplomatic chief Catherine Ashton led calls on Friday for Europe
to grant special exemptions from trade tariffs to Pakistan as part of a
wide-ranging aid programme following disastrous floods.
The European Union’s top overseas envoy urged foreign ministers
holding weekend talks in a Brussels palace to “link together” policies
from humanitarian aid to trade, to offset floods that have turned some
21 million lives upside down and so far killed 1,760 people.The
Pakistani people “need the capacity to develop their economic platform,
through trade,” Ashton said on arrival at the weekend retreat, demanding
a “political and economic approach” to aid.

Alawathugoda Saman Devalaya Annual Esala Perahera begins on September
15. Basnayake Nilame Jayampathy Heenkenda said Kumbal Perahera will be
held from 15 to 19 in the Devalaya premises and from 20 to 24 Randoli
Perahera parade the streets. Water cutting ceremony will be on September
25.
Law seminar
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka’s (BASL) seminars committee under
the Chairmanship of Attorney-at-Law Anoma Goonetilleke has organized a
seminar on the Banks, the Law, the Lawyers on September 17 and 18 at
Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo. Chief Justice Asoka de Silva will be the
Chief Guest at the inaugural ceremony. A number of eminent Judges and
Lawyers who have specialized in Banking Law will make presentations.
