H G P Nelson fought for People's welfare

Late Minister and Parliamentarian H. G. P. Nelson was a political friend and a teacher for me eventhough he belonged to the opposing political camp. His death following a long illness is a cause for personal grief, said Health Minister and SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena in a condolence message issued yesterday.

The message said, "H. G. P. Nelson who functioned as Chairman Polonnaruwa Town Council during my schooldays later became my chief political opponent. We always fought within political parameters to promote the welfare of the country and its people according to our political beliefs. Clashes between us were only political and never of a personal nature." It was the massive development schemes launched by late Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake, specially the Colonization Schemes in Polonnaruwa which led to the emergence of Mr. Nelson as a veteran politician.

While expressing my deepest sympathies to Mrs. Nelson and children I wish him the supreme bliss of Nibbana.
