Opposition takes to hollow political slogan

The Opposition allegation that the proposed constitutional amendment will lead to a dictatorship in the country is only a hollow political slogan.

This goes to prove that Opposition parties have acceded that President Mahinda Rajapaksa can never be defeated, said Petroleum Industries Minister and UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha in a communique issued yesterday.

The communique added that certain political parties, international forces and NGOs which detested President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s leadership needed political slogans for their own existence. That was why they were trying to dub the proposed constitutional amendment as an attempt to foist a dictatorship.

The communique said the main Opposition party famous for betrayals and a politician with a defeatist mentality working for his own doom had alleged that the Government had no mandate from the people for the proposed constitutional amendment. Almost 74.49 percent of total registered voters cast their votes at the 2010 Presidential election and President Rajapaksa received 58 percent of the total number of votes cast.

The UPFA captured 144 seats at the 2010 General Election and to say the Government had no mandate from the people was a mere joke.
