Abducted child (9) thrown into Victoria reservoir

A nine year old boy Lasith Rasanjana abducted by some known persons at Sapugaskanda, Kelaniya has had a miraculous escape when his abductors threw him to the Victoria reservoir at Pubudugama, Talatuoya yesterday.

The boy was on his way to a nearby grocery at about 10 in the morning when he was abducted by two persons who came on a three-wheeler. The abductors have telephoned the boy's father, a businessman and demanded a ransom of Rs 800,000 to return the boy.

They have also threatened to kill the boy if the father complained to the police. The boy had escaped by hanging on to the branch of a tree on the inclined bank when his abductors threw him into the Victoria reservoir.

He had later crawled up the incline and reached the road. A vehicle passing by had noticed the boy and informed the Talatuoya police who have taken custody of the boy.

A team of officers from the Talatuoya police headed by Chief Inspector Kamal Ariyawansa are conducting investigations under the instructions of Central Police Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne.

Two police teams have been deployed to arrest the suspects who are believed to have fled toward Digana. AK

Lasith Rasanjana's story

The abducted boy Lasith Rasanjana says that two known uncles came in a three-wheeler and asked him to board a three-wheeler inviting him to visit Kandy. "I was on my way to a grocery to buy a packet of fresh milk and a tooth brush as asked by my mother," he says.

"They gave me food on way. When we had gone a long way I told them that I wanted to go home. Then they scolded me. I was scared and I screamed.

"One uncle squeezed my mouth and strangulated my neck. I found it difficult to breathe. Then they took me out of the three-wheeler and threw me down an inclined bank.

"I rolled down and would have fallen into the water had I not clutched a branch of a tree and hung to it. Later I slowly crawled up the bank and reached the road. Then a vehicle passing by stopped and telephoned the police. The police arrived and rescued me."
