Deputy Transport Minister Rohana Dissanayake said that a new
procedure was unveiled by the National Transport Medical Institute to
prevent the issue of bogus medical certificates.
He said this system would prevent all types of fake medical documents
issued to applicants to provide that they are physically sound to gain a
driving licence. This new system include 11 security safeguards that
cannot be changed for any reason, he said.
There are 16 medical centres registered with the Medical Council to
issue medical certificates confirming the mental and physical aptness
for the driving licences.
Nearly 127 doctors are attached to the Main Branch in Colombo, he
said.
He said there are certain occasions where old application forms are
used from time to time. But soon action will be taken to stop using them
and use only new application forms, he said. The Ministry will adopt all
possible methods to minimize fraud and malpractices affecting the
Transport Ministry, he said.
