Fresh water fingerlings for 121 tanks, reservoirs
The Government has released Rs 8.9 worth of fresh water fingerlings
into 121 identified tanks and reservoirs in the North and East under the
five year program to develop the fresh water fish industry and aqua
culture production in the country.
Under this program, fresh water fingerlings were released to 24
selected tanks in the East under the Neganahira Navodaya program,
Fisheries and Aquatic resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha
Senaratne said.
“We identified 97 tanks in the North to release fresh water
fingerlings under the Uthuru Wasanthaya program,” the Minister said.
Various species of fresh water fish including common carp rohu,
mirigal, big head carp, silver carp, thilapia, niloticas and hirikanaya
had been released to selected tanks and reservoirs in the North and
East.
The Government expects around 1191 metric tones and 617 metric tones
of annual fresh water fish harvest respectively from both Northern and
Eastern regions through this program. IR
