The Government plans to amend the law to allow human rights cases to
be brought before the Court of Appeal, said Justice Minister Athauda
Seneviratne at Parliament yesterday.
According to the present law such cases can only be filed in the
Supreme Court.
This Amendment will allow people to appeal again in the Supreme
Court, challenging judgements given by the Court of Appeal.
The Minister noted these facts when he introduced amendments to the
Judicature Act. The number of High Court judges were increased from 60
to 75 through these amendments.
He also said that this decision was taken to solve the problem of
case delays.
