Special program needed to strengthen trust between police, public
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne highlighted the need to initiate a
program to enhance trust between police and the public.
He pointed out that if the relationship between the police and the
civil society proves to be unhealthy, the well-being of society will be
at stake.
The Premier made these remarks at a discussion held with Inspector
General of Police, Mahinda Balasooriya at the official residence of the
Prime Minister yesterday.
It is heartrending that although the police have made a major
contribution to ensure the safety of the public the due recognition has
not been shown.
Therefore, a special program should be launched to appreciate the
commendable service performed by the entire staff of the Sri Lanka
Police.
In reply IGP Balasoorya said the police Department already taken
measures to launch a program to enhance relationship between the public
and police. In connection with this program one police officer is
already assigned to each Grama Niladhari division.
In addition, the IGP said steps have been taken to improve the
knowledge of Tamil among the police staff and special attention is given
to officers assigned to the North and east.
Nearly 600 police officers are given Tamil lessons and it is the aim
of the Department to train 5,000 officers during next five years,
Balasooriya said.
Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police M.K. Illangakoon was also
present.
