LSSU art festival

"Arundathi 2010", the annual arts festival of the Law College will be held at the Elphinstone theatre on August 4 at 2pm.

Organized by the Law Students' Sinhala Union (LSSU), the "Arundathi" will be graced by Athauda Senevirathne as the Chief Guest.

Among the many cultural and musical items the Arundathi will feature the winning entry of the drama competition and the final round of the Vihangasara singing competition as its staple attractions.

"The Arundathi will see the conclusion of the series of various competitions the LSSU organized throughout the year," said LSSU President Suren Perera, speaking to Daily News.

"Among these competitions were the debating competition, the speech competition, the painting competition, the G. L. M de Silva Memorial Address to the Jury Sinhala medium competition and the Ananda Grero Sinhala Medium Moot Competition, which make up a significant part of the social life in Law College," he added.

The announcing of results of these competitions and the ceremonial prize giving for winners is an eagerly anticipated tradition of the Law College. This year's Gold medal for the Address to Jury Sinhala Medium competition has been won by Gauri Kanchana Pieris, the Silver by Apsara Botheuju and the Bronze by K.A.D Fernando. The "Moot Shield" of the Sinhala medium mooting competition had been won by the intermediate year team comprising of Anushka Rajapaksha, Amila Indika and Tharindu Rajakaruna while Anushka Rajapaksha, C. D. Premarathna and Tharindu Rajakaruna had won respectively the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for Best Individual Performance.

"It must be specially noted that the Ananda Grero moot competition which was initiated this year introduced mooting in Sinhala medium for the first time in the Law College history and the experience of mooting is now open for a greater number of students than who generally participate in the English medium competition. And as the successful practice of the legal profession demands a competent command of both Sinhala and English languages, we believe that this new addition to College life offers a good opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with cases and improve their essential professional skills," said Perera.
