It seems that the Swiss Food Festival gets bigger, livelier and more
crowded by the year. To celebrate the Swiss National Day, Mount Lavinia
Hotel took the initiative to make it a week of great food, spirit and
fellowship
Cream Caramel another favourite to bring the sweeties in you |
The Swiss Food Festival from July 26 to August 1 at MLH is not only a
chance to try new products, savour Swiss wines and watch celebrity chefs
out in force, but also the opportunity to forget about your waist lines
and indulge in whatever crosses your path.
Here are the top highlights of the opening night of the Swiss Food
Festival when the press in Sri Lanka were invited to enjoy an evening of
fellowship.

Yakitori evenings at Nihonbashi
Anyone who takes an evening strolling through any busy city in Japan
will probably come across the clouds of aromatic smoke of yakitori
wafting and the sound of laughter, coming from establishments crowded
with people pouring each other saké and eating yakitori, a popular
after-work meal.
Yakitori |
Nihonbashi's flagship restaurant introduces yakitory evenings for
those who love the pleasure of after work relaxation enjoying fine
Japanese cuisine.
Yakitori, a dish of char grilled, bite-sized pieces of fresh chicken
on bamboo skewers, is not so much of a full meal as it is an
accompaniment for beer and sake. One feature of yakitori is that all
parts of the chicken, including the organs and tail meat, can be used,
not just the thigh and breast. With these different meaty textures,
lightly charred and flavored with a fragrant sauce or salt, everything
goes down easily, and one ends up polishing off quite a lot.
Nihonbashi's yakitory menu range include spectacular chicken wings
and other chicken specialties as well as non-chicken grilled items such
as Tomorokoshi (grilled corn), ebi shio yaki (salt grilled prawn).
Nihonbashi is the only restaurant in Colombo to use hard wood
charcoal (not fuel induced briquettes) every night. Using charcoal is
simply not a barbeque; with a heat that gas or electric cannot match. It
is this heat that seals anything that is cooked and makes it more juicy
and tender when cooked right.
The restaurant is open from 6.00pm to 10.30 pm for dinner.

A little piece of India at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo
The Mumbai Jig returns:
The Mumbai Jig |
This August 7 Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo brings back the Mumbai Jig at
the Poolside where it will transforms into a buzzing Indian street for a
night, complete with food stalls and a music selection imported all the
way from India from 7.30 pm to 11.30 pm.
Stop at one of the stalls and select from typical roadside snacks
like aloo chaat, channa chaat, mixed chaat, papri chaat and bhel puri.
The idea here is to pop these miniature treats into your mouth and
savour the effects of the contrasting flavours, from tangy to spicy, as
they hit your taste buds just seconds apart. Move on to either a chicken
or vegetarian biryani with mutton rara gosht, mumtaji vegetables, palak
paneer, aloo bonda, lasooni murugh tikka, mathi tikka, tandoori murugh,
raita, mint chutney and oriental marinated seer medallions and have them
with an assortment of naan or tandoori roti on the side.
No matter what you select, save a little space in the tummies for the
Indian desserts on offer this special night. Do not leave without trying
the gulab jamun, gajar ka halwa or the rice kheer. Order a tall glass of
faluda or lassi and it doesn't get more Indian street than that!
In the midst of all the excitement, if you can't control those
dancing feet, head to the dance floor and go Bollywood under the stars!
The DJ will bring the sounds of Bollywood to your ears.
