Buddhist talk
Ven Ayagama Susila Thera will deliver a public talk on "The Arahath"
in English at the meeting on the Servants of Buddha Society to be held
at the Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya on July 31 at 4.30
p.m.
Parisara Harasara
The Parisara Harasara educational exhibition will be held at the Army
School in Panagoda, Homagama today and tomorrow.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 7.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
The Principal, teachers and students of the school has organized the
exhibition.
Pre-Ramazan sale
The Zahira College, Colombo Group of 80 will organize a Pre-Ramazan
Sale at Zahira College premises on August 7 from 3.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m.
and August 8 from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.
It will include trade stalls, food stalls, children play areas,
entertainment, cookery demonstration, free health hedical zone.
Bahrain donates dates for Ramazan
Bahrain Prime Minister Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa has sent a
consignment of 20 MT of dates to be distributed among Muslims during the
Ramazan. This donation was in response to a request by Disaster
Management Minister A.H.M. Fowzie to the Prime Minister on June 8.
Minister Fowzie expressed gratitude to the Bahrain Prime Minister and
the people on behalf of the President and the people of Sri Lanka for
the relationship between the two countries.
New acting Minister
President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed H.R. Mithrapala as Acting
Livestock and Rural Community Development Minister. This appointment was
made till Livestock and Rural Community Development Minister Arumugam
Thondaman who is presently abroad returns to the country.
Maternity-childcare Unit opening
The fully equipped two storeyed Maternity-childcare Unit constructed
by the Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thera Foundation at a cost of Rs 15
million for the Ratnapura General Hospital will be opened by President
Mahinda Rajapaksa today at 10.00 a.m.
Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnananada Thera, Health Minister Maithreepala
Sirisena, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W D J
Seneviratne will participate.
Arrested for harassing fishermen

Weligama Police have arrested eight suspects for allegedly
threatening seven coastal fishermen and cutting and removing fishing
nets laid by them along the Mirissa Coast on Tuesday.
Police also recovered parts of nets found in their possession.
The suspects were due to be produced in Court.
Drug dealer arrested
Matale district group corr
A drug dealer was arrested by Dambulla police with four packets of
heroin at the Mirisgoniyawa area. Police said the suspect was one of the
drug dealers in the Dambulla area.
He was produced before Dambulla Magistrate Maheshika Danansuriya and
remanded.
'My Sacrifice was for party unity'
The funeral of Rienzi Algama who died by setting himself ablaze
opposite the UNP headquarters Sirikotha was held at his residence in
Matara yesterday.
UNP MPs and many other party activists gathered to pay their last
respect to the long time party supporter. Before his death he had stated
the reason for his action was his growing disappointment with the
disunity in the UNP and its bleak future.
He was against ousting Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
While in hospital he was reported to have said that his sacrifice is
to set an example to create unity among party supporters.
Algama, aged 60, father of three, was a full-time activist of the
United National Party for more than 29 years. SB
Sri Sumangala - AGM
General Meeting of the Old Pupils' Association of Sri Sumangala Madya
Maha Vidyalaya, Urugamuwa will be held on August 1 at 10 a.m. at the
school auditorium. Among items in the agenda are the election of office
bearers and centenary celebrations of the school.
Book launch, lecture
The first annual lecture to commemorate the late veteran artiste
Tissa Abeysekera will be held today (29) at 3.30 p.m. at the cinema hall
of the National Film Corporation under the patronage of NFC Chairman
Kumar Abeysinghe. The commemorative lecture will be delivered by
well-known author Amarahewa Maddhuma.
A book edited by Sunil Mihindukula titled ‘Cinema Sanskruthika
Prangdhaya’ comprising some of the works of Tissa Abeysekera will also
be launched on this occasion.
AGM
The 55th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Forest Officers’
Union will be held at the auditorium of the Railway Department
Headquarters on July 29 from 9.30 a.m. onwards. The Chief Guest will be
Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

T.D. Kanakkahewa’s biography of veteran Left Leader and former
Communist Party General Secretary K P Silva titled Doovillen Mathuvu
Viplavavaadiyekuge Kathaava will be launched at the auditorium of the
New Town Hall, Colombo on July 30 at 3 p.m. Dr Michael Fernando will
deliver a special lecture at this occasion.
SLLA seminar in Jaffna
Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) will conduct a one-day seminar
at the Jaffna Public Library Auditorium on July 30.
‘Libraries; access to information and empowering people’ is the theme
of the seminar. Jaffna Municipal Council Mayor will be the Chief Guest.
About 75 librarians from university, school and local government sectors
will attend the seminar.
SLLA has organized the seminar in collaboration with the Jaffna
Public Library to commemorate the SLLA Golden Jubilee.
Chemistry Quiz
The written Australian Chemistry Quiz Competition in schools,
arranged by the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon will be held to Year 11
and 12 students on July 31 at 10am.
The examinations will be held in 41 centres. About 140 schools are
participating in this examination. Awards and certificates will be given
to those who do well in the examination. |
