Former PSD Chief granted bail

Former Presidential Security Division Director Nihal Karunaratne was yesterday released on cash bail of Rs 200,000 after Kandy High Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena considered his appeal for bail.

In addition to the cash bail he was ordered to furnish two sureties in a sum of Rs 200,000 each. He was found guilty for intimidating and threatening with death the OIC of Hanguranketha during the period of the 2001 General Election and sentenced to four years RI.

At the time he was an ASP who functioned as the Head of the Presidential Security Division of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. SW
