Lanka's health sector a success - WHO representative

The world salutes Sri Lanka for doing so much with so little and pushing the country from low income level to low middle income level status.

Sri Lanka's maternal and infant mortality rates have significantly gone down.

The war which retarted the country's development for three decades is now over and stability is there, WHO Representative in Sri Lanka, Dr F R Mehta said.

Addressing a workshop held at the Health Education Bureau, Dr Mehta said that diarrhoea and some other diseases have come down and the country's curative and preventive health care is at a very high standard.

People can have access to health services without having to travel long distances and free health services is available for the public.

The literacy rate of the country is high and it is very high among Sri Lankan women.

Education and empowerment of women (mothers) is one of the significant factors behind this success story of Sri Lanka's health sector. ND
