Postmen on mobikes soon

The Postal Department is planning to provide motorcycles to postmen, Post and Telecommunications Minister Jeewan Kumaratunga said.

"The dignity of the Postal Department has to be maintained while employees' job satisfaction is also important," the Minister said adding that postmen will be given motorcycles and other facilities.

Addressing a gathering at the Postal Department head office recently, the Minister said services of certain employees of the Postal Department who have become a problem to the department, might be terminated.

Every employee of the Postal Department is duty bound to safeguard the postal service since the proper functioning of the postal sector is vital for the country's development, he said.

The Department has to play a major role in the society as the main communicator of the nation.

However the severe financial drawback has become a huge obstacle for the development of the Postal Department. Additionally, the department does not meet the present day requirement of the country and citizens. The Postal Department is behind the aspirations of the people.

Therefore the department is lagging behind in the development path, he said.

The Postal Department has taken steps to regulate the postal distribution service. Under this, postmen will be given bicycles and other facilities, the Minister said. DSA
