Most calls related to harassments in schools :

Nearly 1,750 child abuse calls

Line open 24 hours a day :

Anoma Dissanayake

The ‘Child Line’, 24 hour hotline service of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has received 1,750 telephone calls from all areas of the country, NCPA Chairperson Anoma Dissanayake said.

The ‘Child Line’ hotline service was introduced by the NCPA on July 22, aimed at eradicating child abuse and to come to the defence of helpless children.

The NCPA can be contacted free of charge throughout the day over any telephone network by dialing 1929.

Among the telephone calls are complaints, tip-off on child abuse and seeking information.

A greater number of calls are related to harassments in private and Government schools.

The NCPA Chairperson has requested IGP Mahinda Balasooriya for police assistance to inquire into these complaints. The service can be utilised by any person or even a child on any sort of child-related issue such as child abuse, harassment, child labour, complaints and so on.

The hotline service also includes free of charge counselling service.

Children who need counselling can contact the NCPA and the children will be assisted by experts to stabilise their mental make-up, Dissanayake added.
