Facelift for places of worship

A National Program to develop places of religious worship islandwide has got under way under the patronage of Prime Minister D M Jayaratna.

The program began in the Vavuniya District where problems associated with all places of religious worship will be addressed. This National Program was launched with the guidance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a Prime Minister’s Office spokesman told the Daily News.

Identifying religious centres which require renovation, will be done without delay. The authorities have recognized a number of places of religious worship in Vavniya District. There are 20 Buddhist temples, 15 churches,18 mosques and 301 Hindu temples. Action will be taken to solve the problems and difficulties faced by each such place.
