Public views sought for Constitution making
The Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity (BMCNU) has called for
inclusion of public views and aspirations into the Constitution-making
process.
BMCNU has embarked on organizing workshops to create civic
consciousness and promote the engagement of civic organizations and the
Sri Lankan public towards the process of Constitution-making. The
inaugural workshop will be engaging with the Sri Lankan media to promote
a democratic Constitution which has incorporated the people’s views.
The workshop on the theme ‘Towards a Democratic Constitution to Unite
the Nation’ will be held July 20 at 9.00 am at the Marine Grand, Marine
Drive, Wellawatte. Senior representatives from major political parties
will state their views at the beginning of the workshop. This will be
followed by a discussion presided by BMCNU Patron Dr Karunasena
Kodithuwakku.
Youth Affairs Minister Dulles Alahapperuma (SLFP), Technology and
Research Minister Tissa Vitharana (LSSP), Rehabilitation and Prison
Reforms Minister D E W Gunasekara [Communist Party], Karu Jayasuriya MP
(UNP), Rauff Hakeem MP (SLMC), Vijitha Herath MP (DNA), Eswarapatham
Saravanapavan MP (TNA) and Western Provincial Councillor Udaya
Gammanpila (JHU) will participate.
BMCNU, which has been working towards promoting national unity in Sri
Lanka intends to organize provincial level seminars to follow this
inaugural workshop aimed at the media. The seminars will focus on
political parties, religious and ethnic groups, professional bodies,
media personnel, trade unions and civil society organizations, covering
all provinces. |
