OPA condemns Expert Panel
Organization of Professional Association (OPA) having taken note of
the pressure exerted on the Government of Sri Lanka by the action taken
by the Secretary General of the United Nations in appointing an Advisory
Committee on the alleged violation of Human Rights in Sri Lanka, was
unanimous that the Government of Sri Lanka has taken all necessary
action in conformity with the joint statement of the Government of Sri
Lanka and the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon at the
conclusion of the latter’s visit to Sri Lanka on May 23, 2009.
In spite of these salutary measures by the Government of Sri Lanka,
the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed an Advisory Committee
on Sri Lanka without being directed by the UN Security Council or the
General Assembly.
The action taken by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is not in
the spirit of the UN but appears to have been taken under the influence
of some individuals and groups with vested interests,” a statement
issued by the OPA said. |
