Cycle tracks coming up in Colombo

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will set up cycle tracks with the
assistance of the Echo Friendly City Organization.
CMC City Chief Administrator Omar Kamil said the CMC has taken steps
to identify locations to set up cycling tracks. A cycle track will be
initially constructed in the vicinity of Viharamahadevi Park.
"The cycle track will help people to use bicycle and avoid using
vehicles thus reducing pollution," Kamil told the Daily News.
He said the cycle track project will be extended in the Colombo city
and its suburbs. The cycle track system is available in developed
countries for public convenience.
Janaza prayers for Moulavi Niyas
The Sri Lanka Islamic Society appealed to all Trustees of Mosques to
conduct Janaza prayers today after Jumma prayers for President's Islamic
Affairs Coordinator and Ihsaniyyah Arabic College Managing Director
Alhaj Moulavi Niyas Mohamed who passed away last Tuesday.
Dengue declines in Galagedara

Galagedara Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Dr M.U.B.R. Bandara said
although 100 dengue patients and one death had been recorded from the
Galagedara area last year, only three patients were reported from the
area this year.
The Medical Officer said dedicated participation of all officials,
residents, proper awareness programs, house to house cleaning and
fumigation helped curb the deadly disease.
‘Sacred Area development’ under new Ministry

Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry Secretary Chandra
Jayathilaka said the subject of Sacred Area Development has been brought
under the Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry.
Last year, the subject of Sacred Area Development belonged to the
National Physical Planning Department. The National Physical Planning
Department is now under the purview of the Construction, Engineering
Services, Housing and Common Amenities Ministry.
“Files under the subject of Sacred Area Development are now being
brought to the Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry,” the
Ministry Secretary said.
Israel jobs for farmers

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane signed an agreement
with Political Affairs Officer of the Israeli Embassy of Sri Lanka, Itay
Tagner to send Sri Lankan labourers for agriculture sector jobs after
discussions at the Ministry.
Award of certificates
A function will be held at the auditorium of the Kelaniya University
Mass Communications Faculty to award certificates to those who conducted
the survey on “National Development and Social Attitudes” during the
Presidential and General Election period.
Convocation
A convocation ceremony organized by the Distance and Continues
Education Centre of the Peradeniya University will be held at the BMICH,
Colombo on Sunday, July 11 at 7.30am under the patronage of Chancellor
Dr Premadasa Udagama.

The Colombo Chetty Association of Sri Lanka will celebrate its 90th
anniversary on July 10 with a thanksgiving mass at the Church of Our

Mihraj celebration
The Moors Islamic Cultural Home under the auspices of D’awa and
Religious Committee has organized the recital of Subhana Moulud on July
9 after Asar prayers at Pasha Villa, 115, Dematagoda Road, Colombo 9.
The Recital of Moulood will be followed by a talk on the Significance of
Mihraj by Moulavi MMM Mufaz (Nulari).
Physics and Astronomy Olympiad
The National Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad competition 2010 and
the Sri Lankan Physics Olympiad competition 2010 will be held on July
10, The Institute of Physics Sri Lanka said.
The examination centres are at the Departments of Physics in the
Universities of Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Ruhuna, Batticaloa,
Jaffna and in the Vavuniya Campus.
Schoolchildren who have applied to participate at the Olympiad
competitions are requested to visit the examination centres that they
have applied even if they have not received the admissions.
The Physics Olympiad competition will commenced at 9.00am and the
Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad competition at 11.00am on the same

Wild elephant kills farmer

A man was attacked by a wild elephant and killed on the spot near a
botanical garden in Ambalantota yesterday morning.
Police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said Dayananda Jayasinghe,
52, was attacked by a wild elephant and killed on the spot. The victim
who was a farmer was returning home from the Chena cultivation when he
was attacked by a wild elephant.
Sabaragamuwa University students on strike
Sabaragamuwa University students launched a strike from yesterday
demanding the abolition of the suspension imposed on four senior
students for ragging fresh students. The strike would continue till the
demand is met, Student Union President Dhanushka Dissanayake said
University authorities maintain the suspension was on justifiable
grounds and the suspects were caught cutting hair of new students. The
student union alleges that the suspension of students over an incident
that happened eight months ago is an attempt to divert attention away
from the internal problems of the university. |
