UN declared something Government had accepted - Opposition Leader

Ranil
Wickremesinghe

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said in Parliament yesterday that the past year is very important regarding foreign affairs. It was a very significant year which saw the defeat of terrorism, he said.

“Today, even if we meet with foreign ambassadors some question us about it. I had to meet them here since Parliament sessions were in progress. We invited many party leaders in the Opposition to participate in them. While some participated, some had to attend to their essential work. So how can it be an illegal discussion?,” he said.

“Even we have problems regarding the behaviour of the UN Secretary General, we do not urge people to demonstrate in front of the UN office. If we are in the position that we should protect the sovereignty of our country, what the UN had declared is something that the Government had already accepted through the joint statement. Both parties have agreed to secure human rights in the country.”
