Death threats on Abdul Cader:
CID to investigate

The Criminal Investigation Department had taken over the
investigations into the complaint by UNP Parliamentarian Abdul Cader
that he had received several death threats after voting with the
Government during the Budget 2010.
Death fall
Samanthi WEERASEKARA
An Eight year old schoolboy died after falling from a Teak tree at
his garden. He was a resident of Welankale in Mahiyangana.
When he had fallen from the tree, his sister had seen the tragedy and
informed the father. He was rushed to the Mahiyangana hospital.
Youth’s body recovered from sea

The body of a youth who fell into the sea while sightseeing at the
Kudawella blowhole Saturday was recovered Sunday. It was identified as
that of a 23-year-old resident in Wedihitikanda Road Kataragama. The
body is lying at the Tangalle hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, a 15 year old girl, inmate of a children’s home in
Kekunaduwa, Matara was admitted to the Matara hospital in an unconscious
state following an overdose of some medical pills.
Death of Desmond Fernando PC
Former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and President of
the International Bar Association Desmond Fernando has passed away.
He was 77. He was the husband of Suriya Wickramasinghe and son-in-law
of former MP Dr. S. A. Wickremasinghe. The late Desmond Fernando was
only the second Asian to be President of the International Bar
Association. He completed 50 years as a member of the Sri Lanka Bar
Association in 2008 and was its first Secretary in 1974.
Bus and Coach Exhibition 2010
The first ever bus and coach exhibition organized by the National
Transport Commission (NTC) will be held on July 9 and 10 at the Shalika
Ground, Narahenpita. Transport Minister Kumara Welgama will open the
exhibition at 10.00 a.m. on July 9. The goal of this exhibition is to
promote the provision of a safe and quality bus service to the
passengers. Some of the key attractions will be the opportunity to see
the oldest bus in the country and also to experience a modern super
luxury bus used for the transportation of up-market tourists.
Parallel to the exhibition, there will be several value additions to
the event.
Pirith, almsgiving
The annual pirith ceremony and almsgiving organised by the students
of “Voet Inn” Sri Lanka Law College will be held on Friday, July 9 at 9
p.m. followed by the alms giving on Saturday, July 10. Contact R.A.

Awareness program
An awareness program of Social Sciences, organised by the Lecturer
and Academic Coordinator S. Chitra will be held at the Open University
Kandy (Polgolla) Regional Centre on July 10 at 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon.

Waskaduwe Ratanasiri Mahanayake Thera passes away
The Most Ven. Shastrapathi Waskaduwe Ratanasiri Maha Nayake Thera of
the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Sangha Chapter has passed away.
The Maha Nayake Thera was the Chief Incumbent of the Pothuwila Sri
Suriya Bandara Manthrindrarama Maha Viharaya, Director Agiyo Siri Lak
Vocational Training School, Chairman Sri Lanka Sahana Seva Foundation
and Principal Kandawala Maha Vidyalaya.
His remains lie at the Pothuwila Sri Suriyabandara Manthrindrarama
Viharaya. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Opp Leader appointment:
Kandy MC UNPers divided
Asela KURULUWANSA and Sanjaya Maturata
The UNP leadership is said to have forced UNP members of the Kandy
Municipal Council to sign letters supporting the appointment of K.K.
Piyadasa as the Opposition Leader in the council.
There are altogether 22 Opposition members in the Kandy MC and the
majority of them suspect UNP councillor Lucky Jayawardena for the
Opposition Leader’s post.
They are also due to submit affidavits supporting the candidature of
Lucky Jayawardena to council Chairman Saliya Dissanayake when the
Council meets today (July 6).
Drama contest
The inter-school Shakespeare drama competition - 2010 organized by
the Colombo YMCA and the Rotary Club of Colombo North will be held in
September-October 2010. Entries close on July 20, with the Organizing
Secretary, Colombo YMCA, 39, Bristol Street, Colombo 1.
National Film Corporation Cinema Courses to re-commence
Diploma and certificate level courses in cinema conducted by the
Cultural Bureau of the National Film Corporation will re-commence with a
systematic and organized manner.
These courses which will be conducted under the leadership of Dr.
Tudor Weerasinghe and with the guidance of the veteran film producer
Somaratna Dissanayake on the invitation of National Film Corporation
Chairman Kumar Abeysingha will receive contributions from Dr. D.B.
Nihalsingha, Prasanna Vithanage including well-known film artistes and a
large number of university teachers.
The applications will be issued Tuesday July 6 at the National Film
Corporation Hall. |
