Syria - Cuba to beef-up ties
Cuba: Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, began his first official
visit to Cuba during which he will meet President Raul Castro for talks
strengthening bilateral ties.
According to his three-day agenda, the President of the Middle East
country will meet Raśl Castro after placing a wreath at the Cuban
National Hero Jose Marti Monument at Havana's Revolution Square.
Damascus and Havana established diplomatic relations in August 1965
and currently maintain fluid trade links and cooperation on education
and culture.
Cuba has graduated over 200 Syrian youth and currently 25 of them
study in Havana. Al Assad is accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister
Walid Al Moualem and Mansour Azzam, Presidential Affairs Minister in
addition to Policy and Media Advisor to the PresidentBouthaina Shaaban,
Syria, with a 21 million population is an active member of the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) as well as the Caribbean island.
