Lankan contingent ready for YOG

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka yesterday announced the Sri Lankan contingent which will participate in the first ever Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore from August 14 to 26, 2010.

Sri Lankan contingent for the YOG 2010:
Chef de Mission: Nishantha Piyasena
Lady Chaperon: Ms. Dilmini Direckze
Athletes: (Qualified)
Hasintha Shashiranga – Dharmashoka College – Table tennis - Singles
Heshan Unamboowe – Trinity College – Swimming – 100m Backstroke
Madhavee Weeratunga – Mahamaya College – Swimming – 50m Freestyle
Dilshan kariyawasam – Ananda College – Badminton – Singles
(Universality Places)
Indunil Herath – Walala Central – Athletics – 1000m
Nuwani Navodya – Dharmashoka College – Table Tennis – Singles
Lekha Shehani – Convent of Lady of Victories – Badminton – Singles
Coaches:
Jagath Rajapaksa – Table Tennis
Pemlath Uyanhewa – Swimming
Masseur – Donald Wijegunawardena

The Sri Lankan team will consist of two paddlers, two swimmers, two shuttlers, one athlete, two coaches and a masseur along with Lady Chaperon and the Chef de Mission. The NOC Assistant Secretary and the Secretary of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka Nishantha Piyasena who did a good job, being the Chef de Mission at the last year’s Asian Youth Games which was also held in Singapore, will be repeating his job at the Youth Olympics.

Three boys and one girl qualified for the games, namely paddler Hasintha Shashiranga, shuttler Dilshan Kariyawasam and swimmers Heshan Unamboowe and Madhavee Weeratunga. Each country that participates in the YOG will receive four Universality places and three Lankans have already made it to the final list of participants. Thy are athlete Indunil Herath, Paddler Nuwani Navodya and the newest addition, Shuttler Lekha Shehani. “Lekha was enlisted as a result of immense efforts taken by the Chef de Mission Nishantha, after several discussions with the Olympic officials” acknowledged NOC President Hemasiri Fernando at a press briefing held at the Olympic House yesterday.
