Former child combatants who were
deprived of their basic rights including free education by
the LTTE were given a new lease of life by Sarvodaya with
the help of UNICEF yesterday. A new batch of 58 former child
soldiers who underwent training received certificates from
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the
Sarvodaya Batticaloa Centre. These former child combatants
underwent a comprehensive rehabilitation program which
included vocational training, familiarization tour,
meditation programs. Resettlement Deputy Minister
Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan and Eastern Province Chief
Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan were also present.

Golden Jubilee inauguration
The Installation of the 50th President (Golden Jubilee inauguration)
of the Rotary Club of Colombo West, Rtn Pradeep Amirthanayagam will take
place on Saturday, July 3 at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel with Deputy
Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama as Chief Guest.
Carey walk, fair
The Old Boys’ Union of Carey College has organized a Carey walk and
fair on Saturday, July 3 to collect funds for the construct of a basket
ball court.
The walk will commence at the College premises and proceed towards
Ward Place, Town Hall Junction and Liption Circus.
The fair will be held at the college premises on the same day.
OUSL 30th anniversary
The Open University of Sri Lanka will celebrate its 30th anniversary
with an exhibition to be held at the OUSL Polgolla Centre, Kandy on July
1, 2.
Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake, Media Minister Keheliya
Rambukwella, OUSL Vice Chancellor Vidanapathirana, Deans of all
faculties, Heads of the Departments will attend.
Librarians’ AGM on June 30
The 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Sri Lanka Library
Association (SLFI) will be held on June 30 at the Sri Lanka Foundation
Institute. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena will be the chief
guest and the keynote speaker librarians Prof. W.B. Dorakumbura and Mani
Silva will be the guests of honour at the opening ceremony which will be
followed by a session of professional presentations.

Electoral register updating goes on

The updating of electoral registers of voters had commenced from June
1 and it will be in progress up to mid August this year, Elections
Additional Commissioner W.P. Sumanasiri told the Daily News yesterday.
Sumanasiri appealed to the public to be aware about receiving their
registration forms and inquire about it in case of not receiving them
from the Grama Niladaris of the area, in case they have not yet received
them.
According to public complaints, certain households in electorates
such as Kotte and Negombo have not yet received registration forms for
updating. |
