Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi year from 2011 to 2012

The period from Vesak Poya day next year to Vesak Poya Day 2012 will be proclaimed as the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Year to mark the 2600th Sambuddha Jayanthi.

A Cabinet memorandum to this effect will be presented soon, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said when he presided over a meeting of the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Presidential Operation’s Committee at the Prime Minister’s Office recently.

Prime Minister Jayaratne said the noble effort launched by the Government to create a disciplined and virtuous society should gain the unstinted support of all.

He said ceremonies to mark the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi will be held at Divisional Secretariat level centred rural village temples. Divisional Secretaries had already been apprised about this and asked to submit progress reports.

Maha Sangha belonging to the three Nikayas, Prime Minister’s Secretary S. Amarasekera, Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry Secretary P.W.D.C. Jayatilleke, Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry Additional Secretary K.S. Weeratunga, External Affairs Ministry Additional Secretary W.M. Seneviratne and Operations Committee Secretary K. Kalupahana were also present.
