The Third Summit of
the SAARC Ministers of Internal and Home Affairs concluded
In Islamabad, Pakistan with a proposal to set up a regional
Police Unit, named SAARCPOLE. SAARCPOLE is to be the South
Asian counterpart of INTERPOL. Here Public Management
Reforms Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka who represented
Sri Lanka at the Summit with SAARC General Secretary Shil
Kanth Sharma. Delegates from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh,
Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives and Sri Lanka attended
the Summit. |

Defence Ministry
Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Guest Speaker at the
Fourth Key Persons’ Forum speaking on ‘Creating favourable
business environment by maintaining law and order’ at the
Colombo Hilton Residence (JAIC). The forum was organized by
the Small and Medium Enterprise Developers in partnership
with Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri
Lanka and Friedrich Naumann Foundation. |

Army
Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya visited Kandy
on the eve of the Poson festival and paid homage to the
sacred Tooth Relic at Kandy and called on the Mahanayake
Thera’s of Asgiriya and Malwatte chapters. Here the army

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa donated 55 wheelchairs to
disabled children in different areas of the island. Children
in the Menikfarm welfare centre and those who were disabled
due to terrorist activities are among them. The function was
held at Temple Trees, recently. This donation was made by
Sri Lankans in Vienna by courtesy of the Sri Lankan Embassy

Ruhuna Science Faculty reopens today
Ruhuna University Science Faculty will reopen today while the
re-opening of the Anthropology Faculty and Management and Finance
Faculty will be decided at a meeting tomorrow.
These faculties were closed due to a conflict between students.
A’pura schools reopen
Amila Prabath Wanasinghe
Twenty seven schools in the Anuradhapura district closed for Poson
festival will open today.
These schools were closed to provide accommodation to Security Forces
personnel in Anuradhapura during Poson, Provincial Education Director H.
K. M. Jinapala said.
Guest lecture
A guest lecture on ‘Transistors to lasers - then and now’ by Prof. A.
G. Unil Perera (Professor of Physics and Associate Chair, Department of
Physics and Astronomy, Georgia State University, Atlanta, USA) will be
held Monday June 28 at 4 p.m. at SLAAS auditorium, 120/10, Wijerama
Road, Colombo 7. All are welcome.
The lecture is organized jointly by the Institute of Physics, Sri
Lanka, and the SLAAS Section E-1 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of
the laser invention (1960-2010).
Thurusaviya meeting
A meeting will be held for the Kegalle district Thurusaviya union
officials today under the patronage of Thurusaviya fund chairman W.D.D.C.
Dissanayaka at the Kegalle Town Hall.
The meeting will brief the officials on the five-year development
plan of the Thurusaviya Fund Program. Officials of 62, District
Thurusaviya unions will participate at this meeting.
Kegalle Rubber Development Deputy Director A.V. Swarnalatha and all
the Rubber Development officers will participate.
Inter-school drama competition - 2010
Applications are invited for the Inter-school Drama Competition -
2010 organized annually by the National Heritage and Cultural Affairs
Ministry in collaboration with the Education Ministry and the Tower Hall
Foundation.
All schools are eligible to participate in the competition held in
Sinhala medium under three categories- short drama, long drama and
Nurthigeetha.
Applications and scenes details could be obtained by sending a letter
addressed to the Director General, Tower Hall Foundation, Savusiripaya,
123, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07 or by presence.
The envelop should be marked “Interschool Drama Competition - 2010”
on the top left hand corner of the envelope. Applications are accepted
up to July 16, the Tower Hall Foundation said.
Sea Sunday service
The Mission to Seafarers “Sea Sunday” service will be held at St.
Peter’s Church Colombo 1, adjoining Police Headquarters and Grand
Oriental Hotel on Sunday July 11 at 10.00 a.m.
The officient at this service will be the Colombo Archdeacon
Venerable Chrisantha Mendis assisted by Rev. Chandran Crispus and Rev.
Malinda De Mel. The preacher will be Rev. Chandran Crispus vicar of St.
Peter’s Church Fort.
The Sri Lanka Navy band and the cathedral choir will also be in
attendance.
Liberal leaders for Presidential inauguration
Liberal Party of Sri Lanka Leader Kamal Nissanka and International
Secretary of the Liberal Party Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha MP left to Manila
to participate in the oath making and inauguration of President elect
Benigno Simeon Aquino III as the President of the Republic of the
Philippines.
Man hacked to death
Bandula Guansekara and T.K. Ariyadasa, Malimbada

A father of five aged 48 year was hacked to death at Athu-ela in
Pitabeddara.
The victim, Ethideva Ranasinghe Dhanapala (48) was a resident of the
Yovun Gammanaya in Athu-ela, Pitabeddara.
The Pitabeddara Police are investigating. |
