New Trinco CC co-chair
Trincomalee District Parliamentarian and Deputy Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources Minister Susantha Punchinilame has been appointed Co-chair of
the Trincomalee District Coordination Committee (CC) by President
Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Diploma Awards
The Second Diploma Awarding Ceremony of the Higher Diploma Course on
Local Governance conducted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Local
Governance will be held at the BMICH on June 29 at 10 a.m.
Poson zone
Anamaduwa and the suburbs have been declared as a Poson zone. Various
religious activities will be conducted in the shrines of the area.
A colourful Poson pandal will also be erected in the Anamaduwa city
and be displayed from today to 28. In addition a Poson lantern
competition and a number of dansalas will be held during the Poson days.
Perahera
The Poson Perahera of Kahapathwala Raja Maha Viharaya Mawatagama will
be held at Kahapathwala on June 26. The perahera will start from the
Rajamaha Viharaya at 7.30 p.m.

The annual Mihindu Perahera of Sri Sudharmaramaya, Alawwa will parade
Alawwa town on June 26.
The Mihindu Perahera of the Malaboda Purana Rajamaha Viharaya will
also be held today.
Fake notes land two in jail

A man and a woman charged of possessions two counterfeit notes in the
denomination of Rs 100 were remanded till June 29.
Thamara Kumari Wasanthi and Prabath Ranasinghe were produced before
Panadura Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake by Morontuduwa Police.
Gale damages houses
Chaminda PERERA
A number of houses and State buildings in the Habaraduwa Police
division were damaged by gusty winds which blew across the area
yesterday. Roofs of several houses were blown off and trees uprooted and
fallen across the roads obstructing traffic on main roads.
Police Spokesman SP Priyashantha Jayakody said no personal damage was
reported from the area.
Meanwhile, Weeraketiya Police yesterday arrested five suspects
involved in the robbery of a laptop worth Rs. 89,200, a mobile phone and
several valuable items. A motorcycle used by the suspects for the
robbery was also recovered by the Police.
Meanwhile, Bandaragama Police yesterday arrested three suspects who
were involved in the robbery of a three wheeler worth Rs 350,000 in
Gelanigama. The suspects were to be produced before the Courts.
Stamp collector Francis P. Gunasekera no more
Retired Government Servant, and well-known writer and famous stamp
collector, Francis. P. Gunasekera of Kandana passed away at age of 87
yesterday.
He contributed a valuable articles to the Daily News and Dinamina for
several years on stamps. He was a popular personality in the stamp
collecting field in Asia region.
His remains are lying at Pinibindu, Fathima Mawatha, Kandana and the
final rights will take place Saturday (26) at 4.00 pm in the Roman
Catholic Cemetery, Kandana.
Navy Poson Bathi Gee
Sri Lanka Navy will conduct a Poson Bathi Gee Prasangaya (Poson
Devotional Songs Concert) on a naval boat on the Kirulapona Canal.
The Navy Band will present the Poson Bathi Gee Prasangaya on a
decorated Navy boat which will sail between Battaramulla and Wellawatte
on Poson Poya Day from 7 to 9 p.m.

A special meeting and get-together of Matara Rahula College '95 Group
Old Boys' Association will be held on June 26, 6 p.m. at the White House

Workshop
A special workshop for instructors of physical fitness, persons
engaged in physical fitness and those interested on the subject will be
held free of charge on June 3 from 9 a.m. at Open Arc School Nugegoda by
Lanka Fitness and Nutrition Institute.
At the workshop lectures will be delivered on the importance of
adapting the subjects Sports Science and Exercise Physiology,
Biomechanics, Nutrition and Weight Management, Fitness Test and Exercise
Prescription, and Sport Physiology.

Colombo YMCA speech contest
The Colombo YMCA speech contest based on Sir Edwin Arnold's The Light
of the World will be held on August 28 and September 4.
The contest is open to students below 18 years.
Entries close on July 15. Entry forms can be obtained from the
Colombo YMCA Youth Department.
Conference on Internet
A conference on 'The history and current status of the Internet and
related activities in Sri Lanka' organized by LK Domain Registry in
collaboration with ICTA will be held on June 28 and 29 at Mount Lavinia
Hotel.
Technology and Research Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana, will be the
chief guest.
Workshop
Knowledge sharing program and a workshop on 'Adaptation of best Asian
innovation practices in the Sri Lankan context' organized by the
National Science and Technology Commission in collaboration with Kyung
Hee University and the Asian Development Bank will be held on June 28
and 29 at 9.00 a.m at the Taj Samudra, Colombo. The keynote address will
be delivered by Technology and Research Minister Prof. Tlssa Vitarana.
Corporate finance diploma
The Colombo University Mathematics Department is offering a new
Diploma in Corporate Finance.
It offers participants an opportunity to acquire and develop the
skills and competencies required of a financial analyzer. Special
emphasis has been placed on practical examples and case studies of
current financial topics and provide students with the opportunity to
familiarize themselves with the current Corporate climate.

A baby jumbo was killed when it was
knocked down by a lorry near Punava Navy Camp yesterday. The
baby elephant was roaming with its mother and the herd on the
Medawachchiya-Vavuniya A9 Road. The tragedy occurred at about
