Flood alert in Ratnapura

The District Disaster Management Ratnapura issued a flood alert yesterday in the early hours warning over a public address system for people about an impending flood.

Some residents had left their homes even before the warning was given as the approach road to the Muslim Maha Vidyalaya was flooded with the overflow of the Kaluganaga earlier of the day but had receded a few hours later.

Disaster Management Office operations officer Priyankara Abeyratna said the public warning was issued as the water level of the Kaluganga was rising during the night.

The water level of the Kaluganga had risen to minor flood level yesterday night with rains falling on the Sri Pada and Ilukgoda hill areas during the night.
