No ad-hoc constructions near housing schemes, says Minister

Unauthorized constructions near housing schemes in and around Colombo will not be allowed. Such constructions will be demolished immediately even if they are provided with electricity and water, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.

Unauthorized constructions built by the residents were purely for selfish reasons. They will be a threat to residents as well as the maintenance of solid waste disposal system and other infrastructure facilities of the housing schemes creating personal conflicts too," the Minister added.

Minister Weerawansa disclosed this while participating at the third "Jana Setha" Ministerial Mobile Service conducted at the Soysapura Housing Scheme recently.

The Minister asked the National Housing Development Authority and Condominium Management Authority officials to intervene in the matter.

The Minister also ordered for a police post to be established inside the scheme, attached to the Moratuwa Police Station.

He said even though the solid waste disposal activities are bound with the Management Corporation of the Scheme, the NHDA is carrying out these activities at a cost of Rs.150,000 monthly.
